FARRINGTON
SENIORS ON TOUR - NO RAIN IN SPAIN
Twenty
members of Farrington Golf Club Seniors Section recently returned
from an 8 day golfing trip to Costa do la Luz in Southern Spain.
The week before we arrived it had rained non-stop for four days
we were however to enjoy the best sunshine of the year so far. Five
courses were played with varying degrees of success - perhaps Cindys
Bar played a small role for those of us who miserably failed! The
'piece de resistance' was our last game where we played the Seve
designed 'Quinta do Vale' course. We had been reliably informed
that the most number of balls lost in one round was an astonishing
27! There were a few of us determined to better that particular
score!

Farrington
Seniors Tour - Sunday/Monday - 22nd/23rd August 2010 - Vale of Glamorgan
It
become quickly apparent that The Vale of Glamorgan complex is something
special as you approach the hotel, immediately on the right is the expansive
shared training facilities of Cardiff Blue and Cardiff City. What facilities!
Their own sports hall and immaculate pitches, laid out snooker table flat
with rifle straight line markings. The hotel also doesn’t disappoint.
A car park with the footprint of Bristol Airport; sizeable rooms boasting
both a bath and a double shower; wales largest spa, a gym and a 20m indoor
pool to exercise your body and wireless broadband in the rooms to exercise
your mind; plus of course two beautiful golf courses – one a PGA
championship course with facilities that stand fair comparison with those
at Pebble Beach – trust me I’ve been there.
After a bacon bap, a gander at our well stocked goodies bag and of course
the obligatory coffee, we were ready to tackle the National Course. Even
playing 4BBB, how would it be possible for us 26 aging seniors to manage
a decent score on a monstrous course a few yards short of 7000 yards?
Conditions were also against us, with wet fairways, really long par 4’s
that required driver, 9 iron just to get past the ladies tees, a 16th
green that was so large that it has its own postcode, a par three 12th
hole requiring a long drive into the wind over a huge bunker that would
swallow all the sand in the Gobi desert. Which of Farrington Seniors pairs
would master this monster of a course? Cometh the moment, cometh the men.
Step forward Mike Hedges and Dave Sherborne. Mike was Ulysses and Jeff
Capes, Dave was Popeye and Atlas leading the Titans. 44 points –
they sure play a mean pinball.
Sure it was a long and challenging course, but what a beauty. Immaculate
fairways cut so the grass bent obligingly towards the greens, great views,
peace and tranquillity, manicured nature at its best.
Shower and pre-dinner drinks in our rooms before the evening meal. I promise,
Graham, not to reveal the senior who over indulged and needed propping
up on his way to the club house for the evening meal . He was not alone,
many joined him satiated, staggering back to their rooms through the rain
afterwards, overdrunk, overfed, overheated, overgolfed and over in wales.
What a meal. Fabulous starters with a self service choice of soup, scampi,
breaded mushrooms, pasta, cold meats, cheeses, shrimps, salads, curried
chicken - plates overflowed. Follow that with beef or lamb carvery with
all the trimmings. All washed down with the 12 complimentary bottles of
wine, expensive wine, with a nose like the sound of trumpets. If that
was not enough, then there was a choice of fruit, sponges, strawberries
and cream and varieties of cakes. Tony Clement confessed that he thought
he had died and gone to ‘Cake Heaven’. Those who had paced
themselves then squeezed in cheese and biscuits and coffee. Afterwards
Jim Farmer battled to be heard, amongst our usual riotous behaviour, as
he then proceeded to fine everyone for the day’s misdemeanours.
Result - £50 for the Seniors Captains Charity, well done Jim for
being such an observant nasty b******d.
Mondays magnificent breakfast welcomed the early risers at 7.30 but many
staggered in bleary eyed, nearer 10.00. It was noticeable that the late
comers avoided the ‘greasy spoon’ option, instead, toast and
buckets of black coffee.
The Challenge Tour was scheduled to start on The National on Wednesday
and all the staff were noticeably busy in preparation. The practice facilities
were inundated with look-alike Ian Pouters and Paul Caseys. They were
young and talented (don’t you just hate them for both these qualities?),
bright, smart, slim, athletic, keen, polite, it made you proud to be British
- or Welsh? Day 2 on the Lake Course, actually water comes into play less
frequently than on The National Course, was for teams of four with a reverse
bowmaker format - three, then two then one. The course was a breeze in
the park compared to Sunday, a tighter but more manageable course for
the shorter hitters, which I have to admit is all of us. Again a little
beauty. Lots of lakes and a wonderful dog leg par 4 signature 12th hole
with a finishing island green and water views that would not look out
of place in a Monet painting. The victorious team were Graham Marsh, Dave
Sherborne, Ian Clement and Roger Stone with a creditable, but not massive
79 points - they sure know how to boogie-woogie.
Afterwards all were unanimous in voting this as our best senior deal and
short break golfing experience so far. The challenge Ken is to improve
on that - it will be really hard to beat.
Thanks to Ken Hutton for his professions contribution to the health and
safety notices that blight our golf courses, but more importantly for
organising such a fabulous break with his usual military precision.
Thanks also to Ian Clement for being the Ian that we all love, and for
master minding the competitions and prizes in his own inimitable way.
We will go back.
